This product is quite solid, and at around $20, it's hard to pass up. It has a solid, metal shell with a plastic faceplate. I've had absolutely no problems with it whatsoever, and installation is a snap.
The fan is so loud in this case I have to power it off when I'm not using the DVD writer I installed in it. It's actually louder than the PC I have sitting on the floor and that case has 4 fans in it. Other than that I have no complaints. If the noise doesn't bother you then you will probably like this very inexpensive case.
Currently using it with Windows Vista. The fan isn't too loud. Did not need to install anything and it works great. I connected a DVD burner to the enclosure; I have had no problems with watching DVDs or burning video files to DVD. A small con is that you have to plug the enclosure into a power outlet; it does not get any of its power through the USB connection. The enclosure I got is more round/oval than it is square, but it poses no problems for me.
Had an old CD-RW sitting around.so I ordered this to be able to use with an Asus Eee laptop. This alternative is so much more attractive & cheaper than purchasing an external drive. You actually get the same thing for a much higher cost.rather than just buying an internal drive & this enclosure.
I used a remote control plug and velcroed the remote to the front of desk to turn unit off and on without reaching to back of unit, so fan does not run all the time. Sabrent EC-525K USB 2.0 5.25-Inch Aluminum 5.25-Inch IDE Hard Drive Enclosure for CD-ROM/CD-R/CD-RW/DVD-ROM/DVD+RW/DVD-REBought for ide dvd drive from old computer(new unit is SATA, so would'nt fit internally. Not noisy to me as noted in other post (perhaps noise is related to specific dvd drive. Works plug& play for Samsung and for NEC dvd drives. Plastic end caps as stated in other post and useless instructions but works great. Hard to beat it at the price. Unit is rounded on edges and not rectangular as pictured.
